What causes Cell Differentiation?
All multi-cellular organisms go through a process called cellular differentiation. This occurs due to the fact that the cells need to do different things in order for us to survive. Cell differentiation is controlled by the DNA which is like the instructions book. These ‘instructions’ make the different cells do different things. For example, in a classroom, if 2 students both have books #1-5 but student #1 reads books #1,3 and 5 but student #2 reads books #2 and 4, they will have different assignments. Also, once the cells are differentiated, the cells that are coded with the same DNA team up to form tissues, organs and organ systems. There are also cells called stem cells. They have the ability to respond to specific needs and become specialized to deal with the problem, kind of like Diego’s rescue pack.
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages to Cities becoming Differentiated or Specialized?
What can a City learn from a Cell about how to Differentiate properly?
It is clear that the city can learn to respond to different needs better like the stem cell. To build on this idea, if each city had a sort of ‘specialized’ team that had different members that specialized in different areas, it would be a great way to improve our city. For example, say a light goes out, in a city without this specialized team, the light would be out for maybe a week before an electrician gets to it, but with this specialized team, the light would be fixed by the end of the day. Another lesson from the cell is to have every person have a job, but there’s enough space for everyone. Doing this would remove the problem of homelessness. In addition, everyone would have enough money to keep themselves healthy.
